Finally I bought the DVD and did a new rip. The picture quality of the DVD is pretty bad, but I tried to enhance it as much as possible.
Here's the result:

I would say yes, but not much. The picture is a bit sharper and clearer.

From the Thomas Mann novel comes this story of a family vacationing in Italy and there finding itself engulfed by the growing Fascist party. A boy (Jan Wachtel) of roughly fifteen and a girl (Nina Schweser) of about ten have significant roles throughout.

There is a "Making of" for this film, including the beach scenes, but its quality was atrocious and not worth posting.

Thanks, ghost. That's the one. Looks like it was taken on a cheap cell phone, except they didn't have cell phones then. ;)

Cell phones shoot 4K video these days. You still get the annoying shakycam thing, the camera dipping down to the ground at odd moments, and all that other stuff that screams amateur, but the image itself is crisp and clear. This looks like someone used an early model camera phone, playing back a video on their TV and recording the screen from a few feet away. Appears to be the best version there is though. Thanks ghost.
