What's in subs
- Mum was badly injured!
You don't remember, Mérette.
What they really say
- Mum was much better at the attic
- You'd better have it in fromt of your eyes, Mérette
...etc
I took it as Mérette complaining that her mother had been badly hurt and didn't look anything like that idealized painting anymore when she died. They object that there's no way she could possibly remember that (being too young at the time).

Granted, I don't speak French and was using various online translators plus context. Simple dialogue they usually get right. The more complex lines I ask myself: how could the often stilted or disjointed sounding output be interpreted in a way that a) makes sense  and  b) fits into the conversation? In some parts of the film you're going to be more certain than others. This scene I'm not surprised I got things wrong, the contextual clues aren't that clear. I believe (and certainly hope!) that I did much better in scenes where the gist of the conversation is more obvious. Most of the interactions between Mérette and the priest for example could only be interpreted one way.

The best someone like me can hope to do is get most of the dialogue close enough. Subtitling (especially when you don't know the original language) is a tedious and time consuming task no one looks forward to - if you're a French speaker and would like to contribute highly accurate subtitles, that would be welcome!

Yea, I know that feeling. I translated "Piccole Labbra" from Italian into Russian, not knowing Italian at all. I had English subtitles, which turned out to be inaccurate, somewhat like in this case. I was lucky Italian spelling is more or less phonetic, so I typed what I heard in Google translate and was able to get some results. And now days thechnologies are more advanced: speach recognition software can help a lot in getting the words spelled.

I am not so good at French either, but at least I know a bit. So I clearly heard the word "grenier" which means attic :)

You're actually right. IMDB says Switzerland | France.

I moved it to the Unlisted forum.
