Image Hosts

Post by Phuzzy4242 »   2 likes

It's been brought to our attention that some image hosts are displaying really offensive porn ads when they display the pictures we link to. That, of course, is their right but it's inappropriate for a childhood movies board. In particular, imagevenue seems to have ramped up their porn more than most. Since we have a "built-in" image host (look for the Add image to post link at the bottom of the message editor window), we'd appreciate it if you use that instead of some other image host. I'll update this list as needed.

Please do not use the following image hosts...

I know - I don't know of a free image host that isn't - that's how they pay their bills. Got any suggestions?

Ignore the porn ads....

Our image host works fine and is consistent. I have more of a problem when people use multiple image hosts and I can't see the images without allowing scripts or ip to not be blocked and when allowing scripts having to wonder what else am I allowing just to see a picture. Easier and safer to use image host provided here.

For my cover images I use tinypic because it rarely gets deleted and full image is here so you don't have to click to see it(no porn ads)

Hmm, going through the old posts recently, I've found lots of tinypic images gone. I think they have a time AND hits retention policy.

It doesn't even come close to imagevenue. I only looked at it with Firefox until a couple minutes ago I used IE8.

I warn everybody to NOT go to that site without adequate protection! Not only is the porn extremely 'porny', it also does redirects and I got warnings from my firewall and Symantec. There's no telling what crap they're trying to install on your PC. I'm going to see if I can move pix from there to postimage but that's going to take time.

Firefox with AdBlock Plus, and maybe even NoScript. :)

Is it possible to backup all these images somewhere? I have seen plenty of sites go down recently, leaving entire forums imageless.

Firefox, AdBlock Plus, NoScript, AND FlashBlock.

We could move the pix to another image host, host them directly on the FLM server, or leave them where they are. All have drawbacks. Moving the pix anywhere would be a pain because there are so many (I'd guess at least 1000) posted on imagevenue. We're talking about the best way to handle this.

I am not aware of an automatic backup solution, specially with so many different image hosts. Some time ago I downloaded all inline images for my archive. I should improve that script and update the backup regularly. It would still be a lot of work to replace all images if an image hosts goes down, but at least we would have the (inline) images in the first place.

I have no idea how reliable postimage would be in the long term. I added the postimage phpBB add-on only because it was used on the old server.

Hosting images at FLM (as forum attachments) would be the best in terms of reliability, but it might cause bandwidth problems. Right now it's just (compressed) HTML (+ some graphics, which is in browser cache mostly). Our bandwidth is unspecified by the host, but certainly not unlimited and they might set limits in the future.
